Miami Emerges as a Private Aviation Hub

Miami is becoming the center of the nation’s private aircraft industry, marrying an exceptional location with extensive aviation infrastructure. Smaller airports, pilot training centers, jet engine parts and service centers, and even a thriving aviation law sector offer private jet owners everything they need for fast, efficient, and luxurious travel in one convenient, beautiful place.

After a century of being a commercial and military aviation hub, Miami is rapidly gaining ground as the center of American private and business air travel, too. Since 2012, Miami-Dade County professionals have been building out the city’s private aviation infrastructure, adding hundreds of aviation-related jobs. The Miami Herald article states, “In the past five years, local aviation-sector jobs have grown from a total of $1.2 billion in payroll to $2 billion, now accounting for one of every four local jobs.” While South Florida is an ideal central hub for international travel in all directions, those in the business community work hard to shine a spotlight on all factors that make Miami-Dade County an ideal location for all things aeronautical.

One Community One Goal program

In 2012, the Miami-Dade Beacon Council partnered with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to launch an initiative to grow private aviation in the region by leveraging existing services and filling in gaps with new industry and opportunities. At the time, the field was ripe for development and, in the intervening years, local leaders have taken full advantage of the aviation assets Miami offers.

Building out existing flight-related overhaul and maintenance, parts distribution, as well as aviation and aerospace training industries has resulted in an economic expansion of more than 20% since the project launched. And for business leaders who rely on private jets for corporate travel, the enhanced services and servicing capacities eliminate the need to travel to more than one site to achieve comprehensive maintenance management.

Location, location, location

Along with exceptional services and private jet sales opportunities, Miami’s existing airport facilities also provide a strong foundation for the flourishing industry. Miami International Airport and the city’s smaller public airports offer as much landing space as necessary for the ever-increasing number of public and private planes in need of runways. Consequently, getting in and out of Miami-Dade County is as easy as it is enjoyable.

Miami has emerged as one of the premier hubs for private aviation, and it’s a great time to take advantage of available services. 3 Business Jets to Fulfill Your Need for Speed

For business travelers, time is money. The less time you spend traveling, the more time you have available to focus on business matters. For this reason, many company leaders and business executives turn to private jets both to travel fast and get away from the stress and hassles of commercial air travel.

Regardless of how you choose to travel, today’s jets are faster and more efficient than ever. The fastest private jet in the skies today, introduced in 2014, is the Cessna Citation X+. After losing its previous title of world’s fastest jet to the Gulfstream G650, which can hit Mach 0.925, Cessna introduced the X+ version of its Citation aircraft, which can hit Mach 0.935 when cruising — fast enough to travel from New York City to L.A. in under four hours.

Rounding out the list of fastest jets in the world is the fastest passenger jet: the Boeing 747. In fact, Boeing states the 747-8 has the ability to reach a maximum operating speed of Mach 0.90 and can “travel the length of three FIFA soccer fields in just one second.” Of course, nothing beats traveling in a private jet.
The good news is that the latest generation of business jets is fast. If speed is your goal when traveling for business, here are some of the fastest private jets available to you today.

Hawker Beechcraft 800XP

The Hawker Beechcraft 800XP by Beechcraft — now a sister company of the Cessna Aircraft Company under Textron Aviation — may not be the fastest jet out there, but it still cruses at an impressive speed of Mach 0.81. This, added to its combination of class, comfort, speed, and cabin room is hard to match. The 800XP can comfortably fly 2,500 miles without any wind conditions on an average cruising speed of Mach 0.77 on longer missions and 0.78 on shorter ones, making it a perfect choice for real productivity while in the air.

Gulfstream G650

Speed and grace are two words that best describe the Gulfstream G650. Its wing design, which redefines airflow over the craft, is the result of Gulfstream engineers pushing speed and performance in virtually every way possible.

The aircraft’s wings create an efficient airfoil, improving both speed and flying smoothness. This super-fast jet has a top speed 92% as fast as the speed of sound, a long-range cruise speed of Mach 0.85, and a range of 7,000 nautical miles nonstop when loaded with 8 passengers — about 40% of its total passenger capacity.

Gulfstream G200

Although it was introduced more than 15 years ago and is a little older than its newer and flashier siblings, the Gulfstream G200 is no slouch when it comes to speed. The G200‘s twin Pratt & Whitney Canada PW 306A engines are fuel efficient and quiet even by today’s standards, and boast a typical cruise speed of Mach 0.82. When configured as a corporate shuttle, this mid-size intercontinental business jet can hold enough fuel to carry you and your fellow passengers for 2,710 nautical miles nonstop.

Speed and efficiency are two of the key drivers in business aviation. This list, while by no means conclusive, offers a glimpse on what today’s generation of private aircraft can deliver in terms of swiftness and convenience.

Teterboro Airport

Do You Fly to Any of the Top 5 Business Airports in the US?

For business professionals flying via private jet, small airports are perfect destinations. They are less congested than large commercial facilities, and they are optimal for the value and flexibility of business aircraft. Using smaller business airports also supports the wider aviation community by increasing access to resources and directly boosts the local economy.

With over 5,000 public-use airports in the United States alone, less than 500 are used commercially. This means that you have over 4,500 business airports from which to choose for your business travel. Of those, a few stand above the rest in terms of location, amenities, comfort, and service.

  1. Teterboro AirportTeterboro Airport in Teterboro, New Jersey
Located a mere 12 miles from midtown Manhattan, this airport is a key destination for your business travel to the New York City metropolitan area. By flying into this airport, you avoid the hassle of finding your way to the business districts in midtown and downtown Manhattan from JFK or LaGuardia Airport.

Teterboro Airport has five fixed-base operators (FBOs) that provide aeronautical services including 23 rentable hangars, fueling, tie-down, and aircraft parking.
  2. DuPage Airport in West Chicago, Illinois
DuPage Airport is located 29 miles west of downtown Chicago and is within minutes of western Chicago’s major commercial centers. It is one of the premier business aviation facilities in the United States. In addition to its superior airfield, the grounds house a championship golf course and a high-tech business park.
  3. Van Nuys Airport in Los Angeles, California
Bypass the congested Los Angeles International Airport by flying your private jet into this airport. Located a short 30-minute drive from downtown LA, the facility is one of the world’s busiest business airports. Van Nuys contributes approximately $1.3 billion annually to the U.S. economy.
  4. Laurence G. Hanscom Field Airport in Bedford, Massachusetts
Hanscom Field is located roughly 20 miles northwest of Boston and is the largest general aviation facility in New England. It’s a perfect location for business executives looking for convenient access to “America’s Technology Region,” home to a number of high-tech firms and corporations along the western part of Route 128.

The Dulles airport is located approximately 25 miles from downtown Washington, D.C. and serves both commercial and private jets. It’s the busiest airport in the Washington metropolitan area. Interestingly, it is home to an aerospace museum that houses the Space Shuttle Discovery and several other notable aircraft.

Smaller airports can help you avoid major city traffic, excessive airport use fees, and reduced time slot availability in larger airports. They can also give you more flexibility on timing. The next time you hop on a plane for business travel, put one of the top five small business airports on your itinerary. Before you depart, don’t forget to remind your pilot to check runway lengths and storage options at smaller airports.

Global Business Aviation: Chinese Industry Growth

chinese private jetsIndustry experts predict the Chinese business aviation market is about to explode in terms of growth. China’s private jet sector has taken a long time to catch up to other players — like the U.S. — because of stifled demand and deficient infrastructure. But now, robust opportunities are available to business jet owners there, as the government builds new airports to accommodate growth vital to the Chinese economy.

Growth in China

The Asian Business Aviation Conference and Exhibition was a growth indicator for China, and there is a strong international focus on business aviation in Asia as a result. This could impact business jet travel to and from the U.S., opening channels for better business, easier flying, and increased exchange. Moreover, it will likely drive demand for private and corporate jets alike.

Many management and charter companies operate in China, but not as many individuals fly corporate planes for business. With an enhanced airline-oriented operating environment under development, Chinese aviation leaders hope this will change. Such change would be possible with a pipeline of pilots and maintenance technicians who work solely in business aviation.

Up, up, and away

The number of business jets in China is increasing, and experts predict this will continue well into the future. In fact, in 2015, business jets increased by 3% in China while owners in the country also added 112 new aircraft. Dramatic increases in pre-owned aircraft took place in 2016, with numbers nearly doubling from 71 to 127.

Opportunity for smaller business aviation airports in China exists now, especially since U.S. corporate and private jets presently face challenges accessing busier airports in China, such as in Shanghai and Beijing. This insufficient infrastructure is scheduled to change, however, with 260 airports projected to be in operation by the end of 2020 up from the 220 currently operating. This bodes well for private and corporate jet owners who have access to over 5,000 U.S. facilities but well fewer than 400 Chinese-based facilities.

Increasing airport numbers coupled with high demand for private jets means opportunity for those in the aviation market who are forward thinking enough to focus on the Chinese horizon.

Business and Private Jet Technology Advances

The number of individuals who fully own their private jets — as opposed those who have fractional ownership or fly in chartered jets, is increasing. So, why does this matter? Because your level of ownership directly impacts the conveniences available to you in the air. What are the hottest amenities inside business and private jets?

jet-techConnectivity counts

Business and private jet owners now expect dependable in-flight internet access, and today’s technology can provide it in spades. With lots of high speed options, including satellite communications systems, you can connect anywhere in the world. And as we all know, connectivity is key in the world of private jet travel — especially for those flying for business.

Advanced cockpit technology

Advanced tech for pilots in the cockpit means a more comfortable flight for all. Pilots now have an increased ability to see turbulence in advance, allowing them to give passengers fair warning when things are going to get bumpy.

Moreover, new technology has given way to touchscreen controls, which provides pilots with more intuitive controls and a holistic picture of the entire aircraft.

Additionally, pilots now have greater visibility into inclement weather, so they can avoid danger and divert flights to the safest and smoothest paths. This is equally important with the increasing number of private drones hitting the skies, often interfering with flight paths, as avoiding them means avoiding a crash.

Private and business jet technology is also advancing “under the hood.” According to the Business Jet Traveler article, it now includes better engines, which means getting to your destination faster than ever.

Improved construction also means more cabin space and a quieter ride: On-board meeting rooms offer privacy for business matters, skylights can go from bright to dark and any level of tint in between, and improvements in galley size mean coffeemakers and extra wide high-temperature ovens are now available on many private aircrafts.

While these features are all impressive, industry experts predict technology will only continue to advance and become more luxurious. For example, telecommunications leaders are enhancing air-to-ground services to provide 4G LTE service, enabling fliers to stream videos from the comfort of their private planes. Other up-and-coming technologies include no touch flush toilets, ultra-thin video screens and holographic entertainment systems.
