The company has new facilities and expansions slated for strategic locations across North America and the United Kingdom. An MRO expansion plan
The premise of Gulfstream’s MRO initiative is simple: Keep planes in the sky longer by encouraging consistent repair and maintenance. To encourage adherence to its MRO strategy, Gulfstream’s chief investment is in expanding its MRO presence across the U.S. and the United Kingdom. This means new facilities.
The first of many to come, the company recently opened a new expanded service facility at Appleton International Airport in Wisconsin. Spanning 190,000 square feet, the facility has space for up to 12 Gulfstream jets, dedicated solely to MRO. Coming in at $40M, it’s just the tip of the iceberg for the manufacturer.
Four new facilities will undergo construction beginning in 2020, each tied to a major hub for easy access by Gulfstream jet owners and flight crews. Savannah, GA, Van Nuys, CA, and Palm Beach, FL, will see similar MRO facilities, along with an investment in MRO operations at Farnborough Airport in the United Kingdom. All facilities are expected to open before the close of 2020.
A new era of aircraft maintenance
Gulfstream’s own G500 and G600 aircraft are already on pace to account for a sizeable portion of new deliveries in 2020, and the sky is the limit for the new G700, just released in late October. Gulfstream isn’t only concerned about the new jets it’s delivering, however. The company is paying greater attention to its total fleet ― including older models. An expanded focus on aircraft maintenance will position the company to keep its total fleet airworthy, whether the jet is new or used.
The company plans to collect revenue from its MRO operations, while establishing itself as the gold standard. In doing so, Gulfstream further establishes itself as not only a leader in new jet sales, but also care and maintenance throughout ownership. Gulfstream President Derek Zimmerman outlined this sentiment in a recent statement, saying the focus on MRO will “help us enhance the reliability of our growing fleet, support more customers and elevate their experience …”

Business aviation enthusiasts have long heralded Gulfstream aircraft as the epitome of quality air travel. Its line of business and private jets boasts luxurious features, advanced technologies, and innovative aviation solutions.
Gulfstream’s newest model, the G600, is making progress toward Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification and is on track to receive full certification by the end of 2018. Customer deliveries will begin in early 2019. This certification progress is hot on the heels of the G600’s sister model, the Gulfstream G500, which achieved FAA type and production certification in July.
The G600 first took flight in December 2016. Over the past two years, five of its test-flight aircraft have amassed over 2,000 flight hours in more than 600 flights. The model has already completed the FAA-required ice shape and stall speed trials and began field performance testing in August of this year.
A new model with impressive new features
The G600 is Gulfstream’s newest example of ultra-high luxury in the sky. The ultra-long-range aircraft features many new design elements in the cabin, flight deck, and exterior.
Inside, the cabin fits up to 19 passengers and comfortably sleeps up to nine with convertible seating. The cabin is the longest available in the aircraft’s class, and buyers can configure it in multiple ways to customize it to their needs. Gulfstream also integrated new technology to make the G600 the industry’s first aircraft to have active control sidesticks and touch-screen avionics interfaces on the flight deck.
Most important, the G600 can fly 6,500 nautical miles (nm) at Mach 0.85 and 5,100 nm at Mach 0.90, saving passengers hours of travel time. The model’s top operating speed will be Mach 0.925, which will make it one of the fastest aircraft available.
A cut above the Gulfstream G500
Many of the G600’s features are also included in the company’s smaller G500. However, the G500 does not have the same ultra-long-range capabilities as the G600, making it more appropriate for customers who don’t need the same range requirements.
The G500 still boasts a top speed of Mach 0.925 and flies 5,200 nm at Mach 0.85. Much like the G600, the G500 can fit up to 19 passengers when customers choose a high-efficiency arrangement and comfortably sleeps up to eight people at once.

Peak performance
To introduce the aircraft to the public, Gulfstream sent the large-cabin ultra-long-range G500 model, which can fly 5,200 nautical miles at Mach 0.85 or 4,400 nautical miles at Mach 0.90, on a 12-country world demo tour. The tour started Jan. 8 in Dallas with stops in cities including “Atlanta, New York, Chicago, Milan, Moscow, Beijing, and Melbourne.” The G600 joined the G500 on part of the tour, and the pair set several new city-pair records, including transpacific flights from Shanghai to Honolulu and Honolulu to Savannah, Georgia.
“Gulfstream customers are accustomed to flying practically anywhere in the world at record speeds, and the G500 and G600 have been doing just that as they near certification,” Gulfstream President Mark Burns told AINonline. “These records showcase the real-world capabilities of these impressive aircraft.”

Ready to launch
As certification draws near, Gulfstream is encouraging business aviation insiders to take advantage of the immersive reality experiences it is offering at various locations around the globe. After making its public debut at NBAA in fall 2017, the G600 joined the G500 in appearances at EBACE and ABACE where attendees had the opportunity to see first-hand the aircrafts’ advanced design and safety innovations. They also got to experience Virtual Flight, an interactive experience that features “a view of the pilot seat, all-new active control sidesticks, and a throttle quadrant” as well as experiment with configurations in “Paint Design, Seat Design, and Cabin Experience.”
The jets are drawing a great deal of interest in both Europe and Asia, and visitors have been impressed by their performance, efficiency, and comfort. What, exactly, makes these siblings so attractive? It could be their wider and taller cabins and faster cruise speeds. Other aircraft news
The G500 and G600 are not the only Gulfstreams making news. The G650ER recently added a city-pair speed record, pushing its total tally over 70. And this one is impressive, as it occurred during a flight over the North Pole, a feat only a few high-performance jets can accomplish. The jet made the trip from White Plains, New York, to Shanghai — a total of 6,870 nautical miles — in 13 hours and 40 minutes. As Burns announced in a press release, “Access to these demanding, long-range routes is invaluable for our customers.”
The G650ER can fly 7,500 nautical miles at Mach 0.85. It has two Rolls-Royce BR725 engines and can seat as many as 19 passengers in its fully customizable interior configuration.
If all goes as expected, two more large-cabin fly-by-wire aircraft will be certified and ready for service by the end of the year. By the numbers
As the jet market has started to recover over the last few years, increased demand for large-cabin private aircraft has positioned Gulfstream in a dominant position at the top of the market. 2017 ended strong for jet manufacturer Gulfstream and parent company General Dynamics. Fourth-quarter Gulfstream orders were up 20% due mostly to large-cabin orders, and “Gulfstream G650/650ER orders were up 78 percent year-over-year, making the fourth quarter the best for G650 family sales in three years and the second best quarter overall.”
General Dynamics leaders expect this increase in orders as well as soon-to-be introduced G500 and G600 models to push their company’s aerospace group, which also includes Jet Aviation, to as much as $8.4 billion in 2018 revenue. This would be an increase of $220 million over the previous year. However, they expect only about an 18% profit margin as they also plan to increase spending on R&D. Another factor in the anticipated low profit margin is due to General Dynamics decision-makers transitioning their Gulfstream assembly lines as they reduce G550 output and prepare for the upcoming G500 and G600 to enter into service.
Continued excellence
Although the company is no longer producing G450s, the Gulfstream G280 is still a business and private aviation favorite. This super-midsize jet recently reinforced its superior performance reputation with the addition of three new city-pair records:
Lagos, Nigeria, to Cape Verde, Africa — This 1,858-nautical-mile (nm) flight from Murtala Muhammed International Airport to Amílcar Cabral International Airport took 3 hours, 52 minutes, at Mach 0.84.
Cape Verde to San Juan, Puerto Rico — After landing in Cape Verde, pilots flew the G280 to Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport. They completed this 3,011-nm flight at Mach 0.82 in 6 hours, 40 minutes.
Johannesburg to Lagos — The 2,596-nm journey from Lanseria International Airport to Murtala Muhammed International Airport lasted 5 hours, 31 minutes, with an average speed of Mach 0.83.
The G280, which entered into service in November 2012, performs better than any other aircraft in its class and has 60-plus city-pair records to prove it.
Out with the old …
While the G280 is best in class, the G450 has been one of the best-selling and most celebrated business jets in the industry. Its advanced technology, remarkable range, and unmatched passenger comfort make it one of the most popular business jets in history. In January, however, Gulfstream executives announced it had reached the end of the road. The final Gulfstream G450 has been delivered, freeing up additional Gulfstream production space. Embraer Legacy 500 and 450 — Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer’s Legacy 500 and its slightly shorter sister, the Legacy 450, are some of the fastest jets in the midsize and “mid light” aircraft categories, delivering a high-speed cruise of Mach 0.79 to 0.82, respectively. They are some of only under-$50 million jets that feature full fly-by-wire flight controls. The Legacy 450, with a range of 1,300 nautical miles (nm), has a cabin four feet shorter than the 500, which has a 3,000-nautical-mile range. Both feature superb passenger comfort, low turbulence, and low noise levels.

Gulfstream G500 — Gulfstream’s long-range, large-cabin business jet is scheduled to enter into service in 2019. Its Pratt & Whitney Canada PW814GA engines reduce fuel consumption as well as cut emissions and noise. It sports 27-inch-wide seats with footrests for extra comfortable rides for as many as 19 passengers and includes a large, fully equipped galley. The G500 has a range of 5,200 nm and offers a state-of-the-art Wi-Fi and entertainment system as well as full digital fly-by-wire flight controls.

Pilatus PC-24 — The PC-24 super versatile jet is the first business jet from Swiss manufacturer Pilatus Aircraft. The 10-passenger aircraft, for which deliveries began in January 2018, has a list price of just under $9 million. Its large aft door can handle standard cargo pallets, it flies as fast as 440 knots, and the PC-24 can fly six passengers 1,800 nm. Buyers can even choose among seven cabin layouts for this area that offer more overall space than its more expensive competitors. In addition, the light jet can use grass, gravel, or dirt runways as well as runways less than 2,700 feet, according to the Barron’s article.
Changes in the pre-owned market
Buyers who are not ready to go all-in on a new jet might want to take a look at the pre-owned market while they still can. Although the pre-owned Gulfstream market has been struggling over the past several years, according to an AINOnline article, an increase in pre-owned sales, decreasing inventories, and stabilizing prices have contributed to its ongoing recovery. For example, less than 4% of Gulfstream G650 and G550 fleets are for sale, which is extremely low compared to recent years.
Inventories for older Gulfstream models, however, such as the GIV-SP and G-V, are still high. In addition, values for the G550, which had been dropping nearly 20% per year for three years, have leveled off. Plus, new tax rules that allow for 100% depreciation during the first year for both new and pre-owned jets will likely boost sales in both categories in the coming year.
For those who plan to acquire a pre-owned aircraft, keep in mind the ADS-B mandate, which requires all aircraft be updated by January 2020. ADS-B Out equipment can be expensive, and slots for performing the upgrades are filling up fast. You don’t want your pre-owned new-to-you jet to lose its value or end up in the scrap heap because of your failure to comply.

What does it mean to set a new city-pair record? It means your plane is the fastest to fly from the departure to the destination point. It means connecting people across distant geographic locations with an aircraft’s range. For example, one record included a 10,000-nautical-mile flight from Rio de Janeiro to Tokyo — one of the longest city-pair flights on record.
According to the Aviation International News article, the G650ER’s latest record is already approved by the U.S. National Aeronautic Association and is awaiting world record approval by the Federation Aeronautique Internationale in Switzerland. The G650 line has already established more than 55 world records. With this flight, the G650ER will add this particular city pair to the ranks.
