Just at the debut of the G700 aircraft, Gulfstream entered the thick of its newest initiative: maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO). The company has new facilities and expansions slated for strategic locations across North America and the United Kingdom. The jet maker sees not only the potential to gain MRO market share, but also to preserve its fleet.
An MRO expansion plan
The premise of Gulfstream’s MRO initiative is simple: Keep planes in the sky longer by encouraging consistent repair and maintenance. To encourage adherence to its MRO strategy, Gulfstream’s chief investment is in expanding its MRO presence across the U.S. and the United Kingdom. This means new facilities.
The first of many to come, the company recently opened a new expanded service facility at Appleton International Airport in Wisconsin. Spanning 190,000 square feet, the facility has space for up to 12 Gulfstream jets, dedicated solely to MRO. Coming in at $40M, it’s just the tip of the iceberg for the manufacturer.
Four new facilities will undergo construction beginning in 2020, each tied to a major hub for easy access by Gulfstream jet owners and flight crews. Savannah, GA, Van Nuys, CA, and Palm Beach, FL, will see similar MRO facilities, along with an investment in MRO operations at Farnborough Airport in the United Kingdom. All facilities are expected to open before the close of 2020.
A new era of aircraft maintenance
Gulfstream’s own G500 and G600 aircraft are already on pace to account for a sizeable portion of new deliveries in 2020, and the sky is the limit for the new G700, just released in late October. Gulfstream isn’t only concerned about the new jets it’s delivering, however. The company is paying greater attention to its total fleet ― including older models. An expanded focus on aircraft maintenance will position the company to keep its total fleet airworthy, whether the jet is new or used.
The company plans to collect revenue from its MRO operations, while establishing itself as the gold standard. In doing so, Gulfstream further establishes itself as not only a leader in new jet sales, but also care and maintenance throughout ownership. Gulfstream President Derek Zimmerman outlined this sentiment in a recent statement, saying the focus on MRO will “help us enhance the reliability of our growing fleet, support more customers and elevate their experience …”
MRO in general is growing
It’s not only Gulfstream focusing on MRO. Analysts expect the aviation MRO industry to hit double-digit growth by 2024, which means more companies are likely to follow this manufacturer’s example. Like many sectors of industry, aviation appears to be making the shift to a services-based economy, from a product-driven one.
Getting ahead of the trend allows Gulfstream to begin servicing its worldwide fleet immediately. As other manufacturers race to open MRO facilities and invest in value-add services, Gulfstream needs only to focus on spreading its message: Lifetime care for its jets, whether it’s a legacy aircraft or a brand-new G600 or G700.

Business aviation enthusiasts have long heralded Gulfstream aircraft as the epitome of quality air travel. Its line of business and private jets boasts luxurious features, advanced technologies, and innovative aviation solutions.
Gulfstream’s newest model, the G600, is making progress toward Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification and is on track to receive full certification by the end of 2018. Customer deliveries will begin in early 2019. This certification progress is hot on the heels of the G600’s sister model, the Gulfstream G500, which achieved FAA type and production certification in July.
The G600 first took flight in December 2016. Over the past two years, five of its test-flight aircraft have amassed over 2,000 flight hours in more than 600 flights. The model has already completed the FAA-required ice shape and stall speed trials and began field performance testing in August of this year.
A new model with impressive new features
The G600 is Gulfstream’s newest example of ultra-high luxury in the sky. The ultra-long-range aircraft features many new design elements in the cabin, flight deck, and exterior.
Inside, the cabin fits up to 19 passengers and comfortably sleeps up to nine with convertible seating. The cabin is the longest available in the aircraft’s class, and buyers can configure it in multiple ways to customize it to their needs. Gulfstream also integrated new technology to make the G600 the industry’s first aircraft to have active control sidesticks and touch-screen avionics interfaces on the flight deck.
Most important, the G600 can fly 6,500 nautical miles (nm) at Mach 0.85 and 5,100 nm at Mach 0.90, saving passengers hours of travel time. The model’s top operating speed will be Mach 0.925, which will make it one of the fastest aircraft available.
A cut above the Gulfstream G500
Many of the G600’s features are also included in the company’s smaller G500. However, the G500 does not have the same ultra-long-range capabilities as the G600, making it more appropriate for customers who don’t need the same range requirements.
The G500 still boasts a top speed of Mach 0.925 and flies 5,200 nm at Mach 0.85. Much like the G600, the G500 can fit up to 19 passengers when customers choose a high-efficiency arrangement and comfortably sleeps up to eight people at once.
With the latest technology in business aviation nearing certification and market delivery, you may be tempted to sell your current business or private jet and prepare to buy a new one. Gulfstream Aerospace is having an eventful year. While the company has never done such a pair at once before, Gulfstream leaders expect to certify and enter into service their two newest business jets, the G500 and G600. The Savannah-based aircraft manufacturer’s determination to produce these two twinjets in the same year resulted in five flight test aircraft for each model — and new city-pair flight records.
Peak performance
To introduce the aircraft to the public, Gulfstream sent the large-cabin ultra-long-range G500 model, which can fly 5,200 nautical miles at Mach 0.85 or 4,400 nautical miles at Mach 0.90, on a 12-country world demo tour. The tour started Jan. 8 in Dallas with stops in cities including “Atlanta, New York, Chicago, Milan, Moscow, Beijing, and Melbourne.” The G600 joined the G500 on part of the tour, and the pair set several new city-pair records, including transpacific flights from Shanghai to Honolulu and Honolulu to Savannah, Georgia.
“Gulfstream customers are accustomed to flying practically anywhere in the world at record speeds, and the G500 and G600 have been doing just that as they near certification,” Gulfstream President Mark Burns told AINonline. “These records showcase the real-world capabilities of these impressive aircraft.”
But it’s not all about speed for these two luxury jets. They are also the most technologically advanced aircraft, providing the ultimate in performance, safety, and long-range comfort.
Ready to launch
As certification draws near, Gulfstream is encouraging business aviation insiders to take advantage of the immersive reality experiences it is offering at various locations around the globe. After making its public debut at NBAA in fall 2017, the G600 joined the G500 in appearances at EBACE and ABACE where attendees had the opportunity to see first-hand the aircrafts’ advanced design and safety innovations. They also got to experience Virtual Flight, an interactive experience that features “a view of the pilot seat, all-new active control sidesticks, and a throttle quadrant” as well as experiment with configurations in “Paint Design, Seat Design, and Cabin Experience.”
The jets are drawing a great deal of interest in both Europe and Asia, and visitors have been impressed by their performance, efficiency, and comfort. What, exactly, makes these siblings so attractive? It could be their wider and taller cabins and faster cruise speeds. Behind their Mach 0.90 speeds are Pratt & Whitney Canada’s new PW800 engines paired with Gulfstream’s new wings, according to Aviation Week.
Other aircraft news
The G500 and G600 are not the only Gulfstreams making news. The G650ER recently added a city-pair speed record, pushing its total tally over 70. And this one is impressive, as it occurred during a flight over the North Pole, a feat only a few high-performance jets can accomplish. The jet made the trip from White Plains, New York, to Shanghai — a total of 6,870 nautical miles — in 13 hours and 40 minutes. As Burns announced in a press release, “Access to these demanding, long-range routes is invaluable for our customers.”
The G650ER can fly 7,500 nautical miles at Mach 0.85. It has two Rolls-Royce BR725 engines and can seat as many as 19 passengers in its fully customizable interior configuration.
If all goes as expected, two more large-cabin fly-by-wire aircraft will be certified and ready for service by the end of the year. If you need a jet for traveling the globe quickly, efficiently, and comfortably, Gulfstream’s new options may be just what you’re looking for. And if you can’t wait for their entry into service to fly in luxury, you might look to a preowned Gulfstream jet for your personal or business travel.

As one of the world’s largest private and business jet manufacturers, Gulfstream Aerospace is renowned for its family of high-end, high-performance, large- and midsize cabin jets. The jets are not only some of the most technologically advanced in the world but are also equally known for their distinctive interiors and leading cabin comfort, making them sought-after choices for discerning private and business jet customers.
By the numbers
As the jet market has started to recover over the last few years, increased demand for large-cabin private aircraft has positioned Gulfstream in a dominant position at the top of the market. 2017 ended strong for jet manufacturer Gulfstream and parent company General Dynamics. Fourth-quarter Gulfstream orders were up 20% due mostly to large-cabin orders, and “Gulfstream G650/650ER orders were up 78 percent year-over-year, making the fourth quarter the best for G650 family sales in three years and the second best quarter overall.”
General Dynamics leaders expect this increase in orders as well as soon-to-be introduced G500 and G600 models to push their company’s aerospace group, which also includes Jet Aviation, to as much as $8.4 billion in 2018 revenue. This would be an increase of $220 million over the previous year. However, they expect only about an 18% profit margin as they also plan to increase spending on R&D. Another factor in the anticipated low profit margin is due to General Dynamics decision-makers transitioning their Gulfstream assembly lines as they reduce G550 output and prepare for the upcoming G500 and G600 to enter into service.
Continued excellence
Although the company is no longer producing G450s, the Gulfstream G280 is still a business and private aviation favorite. This super-midsize jet recently reinforced its superior performance reputation with the addition of three new city-pair records:
Lagos, Nigeria, to Cape Verde, Africa — This 1,858-nautical-mile (nm) flight from Murtala Muhammed International Airport to Amílcar Cabral International Airport took 3 hours, 52 minutes, at Mach 0.84.
Cape Verde to San Juan, Puerto Rico — After landing in Cape Verde, pilots flew the G280 to Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport. They completed this 3,011-nm flight at Mach 0.82 in 6 hours, 40 minutes.
Johannesburg to Lagos — The 2,596-nm journey from Lanseria International Airport to Murtala Muhammed International Airport lasted 5 hours, 31 minutes, with an average speed of Mach 0.83.
The G280, which entered into service in November 2012, performs better than any other aircraft in its class and has 60-plus city-pair records to prove it.
Out with the old …
While the G280 is best in class, the G450 has been one of the best-selling and most celebrated business jets in the industry. Its advanced technology, remarkable range, and unmatched passenger comfort make it one of the most popular business jets in history. In January, however, Gulfstream executives announced it had reached the end of the road. The final Gulfstream G450 has been delivered, freeing up additional Gulfstream production space. Although the company will continue to provide support for the G450, it’s time to make room for its successor, the G500.
… in with the new
Gulfstream leaders expect the large-cabin G500 will receive certification and enter into service this year. With that expectation, Gulfstream pilots have begun a 12-country G500 tour to introduce the aircraft to potential customers. The highly anticipated high-performance fly-by-wire jet features advanced technologies and an extra-wide cabin. According to Gulfstream president Mark Burns, the tour will allow customers to explore the aircraft as well as provide the opportunity for Gulfstream insiders to thoroughly test the jet prior to its entry into service.
If you’re excited about the new G500 but don’t want to wait for its entry into the market, some great deals exist on pre-owned Gulfstream jets. Which member of the Gulfstream family will you choose?
The expert jet brokers at L & L International are here to help you acquire the perfect jet.
There’s a lot going on in the private and business aviation industry: Many soon-to-be-released luxury jets are about to enter the market, pre-owned jet prices are stabilizing, and the ADS-B mandate deadline looms. Here’s an overview of what’s happening and what it means for those trying to decide whether to purchase new aircraft, go with pre-owned models, or upgrade their current jets.
New models
Quite a lot of buzz surrounds new luxury jet models coming soon to market. Here’s a taste of what’s on the horizon for those looking to purchase a new high-end aircraft:
Boeing 787 Dreamliner — If you demand nothing less than the height of luxury, the VVIP Dreamliner might be the next jet for you. With the ability to fly nonstop for more than 17 hours, this model provides flyers plenty of time to enjoy its more than 2,400 square feet of cabin space with heated marble floors, a king-size bed, walk-in closet, and full-size shower. If you want to test it out before buying, you can charter this penthouse in the sky for you and 39 of your closest friends for a mere $70,000 per hour.
Embraer Legacy 500 and 450 — Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer’s Legacy 500 and its slightly shorter sister, the Legacy 450, are some of the fastest jets in the midsize and “mid light” aircraft categories, delivering a high-speed cruise of Mach 0.79 to 0.82, respectively. They are some of only under-$50 million jets that feature full fly-by-wire flight controls. The Legacy 450, with a range of 1,300 nautical miles (nm), has a cabin four feet shorter than the 500, which has a 3,000-nautical-mile range. Both feature superb passenger comfort, low turbulence, and low noise levels.
Gulfstream G500 — Gulfstream’s long-range, large-cabin business jet is scheduled to enter into service in 2019. Its Pratt & Whitney Canada PW814GA engines reduce fuel consumption as well as cut emissions and noise. It sports 27-inch-wide seats with footrests for extra comfortable rides for as many as 19 passengers and includes a large, fully equipped galley. The G500 has a range of 5,200 nm and offers a state-of-the-art Wi-Fi and entertainment system as well as full digital fly-by-wire flight controls.
Pilatus PC-24 — The PC-24 super versatile jet is the first business jet from Swiss manufacturer Pilatus Aircraft. The 10-passenger aircraft, for which deliveries began in January 2018, has a list price of just under $9 million. Its large aft door can handle standard cargo pallets, it flies as fast as 440 knots, and the PC-24 can fly six passengers 1,800 nm. Buyers can even choose among seven cabin layouts for this area that offer more overall space than its more expensive competitors. In addition, the light jet can use grass, gravel, or dirt runways as well as runways less than 2,700 feet, according to the Barron’s article.
Changes in the pre-owned market
Buyers who are not ready to go all-in on a new jet might want to take a look at the pre-owned market while they still can. Although the pre-owned Gulfstream market has been struggling over the past several years, according to an AINOnline article, an increase in pre-owned sales, decreasing inventories, and stabilizing prices have contributed to its ongoing recovery. For example, less than 4% of Gulfstream G650 and G550 fleets are for sale, which is extremely low compared to recent years.
Inventories for older Gulfstream models, however, such as the GIV-SP and G-V, are still high. In addition, values for the G550, which had been dropping nearly 20% per year for three years, have leveled off. Plus, new tax rules that allow for 100% depreciation during the first year for both new and pre-owned jets will likely boost sales in both categories in the coming year.
For those who plan to acquire a pre-owned aircraft, keep in mind the ADS-B mandate, which requires all aircraft be updated by January 2020. ADS-B Out equipment can be expensive, and slots for performing the upgrades are filling up fast. You don’t want your pre-owned new-to-you jet to lose its value or end up in the scrap heap because of your failure to comply.
Buying a jet, whether the latest model or a pre-owned model, can be a daunting, time-consuming process. To make the best of your next jet purchase, seek out an expert who understands the markets and can help you get the aircraft for your needs at the right price.

The Gulfstream G650 entered the market five years ago, and today it remains at the high end of the business jet market. Why? There is plenty of competition and newer models. What makes the G650 so popular still?
Background
September 2017 marked five years since the Gulfstream G650 earned its FAA type certification and, since then, more than 250 of the ultra-long-range, wide-cabin business aircraft have sold. In 2014, Gulfstream introduced the G650 Extended Range (ER), which extends its range an additional 500 nautical miles, “giving the G650ER the longest legs of any business jet,” according to Scott Neal, Gulfstream’s senior vice president of worldwide sales and marketing in the Flying article. The extended range capabilities are due to the increased capacity of the gas tanks with no structural modifications required, and the G650ER is also available as an after-market upgrade.
Benefits
G650 designers focused on high performance in every aspect, and the end product delivers. Its unique wing design creates a high-efficiency airfoil that combines high speed with an extremely smooth ride. Other features and benefits include:
The increased range of the G650 and G650ER means more non-stop connections between city pairs such as New York and Tokyo or Los Angeles and London as well as the ability to keep up with today’s fast-paced global marketplace. Together, the G650 and G650ER have set 65 city-pair speed records.
The G650 and G650ER have the lowest cabin altitude of any business aircraft and replace 100% of the air every two minutes, according to Gulfstream. The lower cabin altitude means you arrive at your destination less tired and more refreshed.
The jets provide ample seating space for up to 19 passengers and sleeping accommodations for up to 10.
Wide seats and aisles, 16 panoramic windows, and flexible cabin designs offer spaciousness and a variety of options for meeting rooms, entertainment, dining, and relaxation. The Gulfstream Cabin Management System (GCMS) synchronizes with smart devices to allow passengers to control temperature, lighting, and entertainment options.
Business continues as usual with high-speed internet, satellite communications, a cabin audio system, and print capabilities.
The state-of-the-art PlaneView ll flight deck puts more data at the pilot’s finger tips, allowing them to “think faster than they fly.” And a nose-mounted infrared camera increases safety by providing higher quality images of airports and surrounding terrain at night and in low-visibility conditions.
The Gulfstream G650 was introduced as top-of-the-line in speed, range, comfort, and safety. Today, it continues to sit atop the high-end business aircraft spectrum. What’s next for Gulfstream? The company has started test fights for its spaciously designed G600 model and hopes to begin deliveries in 2018.

When you think of private jets, the first brand that likely comes to mind is Gulfstream. No other jet brand has been a part of pop culture like Gulfstream, a name immortalized in songs and music videos and made synonymous with luxury or the “high life.” A huge part of this reputation comes from the Gulfstream G550, winner of the prestigious Robert J. Collier Trophy when it was the company’s flagship aircraft.
History and technological breakthroughs
The $46.5 million Gulfstream G550 entered service in 2003. It was the first business jet of its kind to feature a “glass cockpit” called PlaneView – a technology aviation industry insiders dreamt of for decades. Technology features include four 14-inch LCD displays that cover the entire instrument panel, offering pilots more viewing area and the ability to see every instrument and data set necessary to fly the jet. Gulfstream also delivered on its promise to add space to the cabin and increase range with this model.
Record-breaking performance
The G550 boasts the ability to fly 6,750 nautical miles nonstop while still being nimble enough to take off from short-field and high-altitude airports. It can fly 12 hours nonstop while transporting 19 passengers.
This month, Gulfstream announced that it delivered its 550th G550, cementing the aircraft’s position of quality and excellence in the world of business aviation. Although it has been around for more than a decade, the G550 still boasts a set of impressive features.
For starters, wireless internet, satellite communication, and an iridium phone and printer come as standard equipment, according to Gulfstream, allowing you to continue being productive in the air. Owners can also configure their G550s to accommodate beds for eight people or fit four living areas such as a private stateroom, rest areas for the crew, and an entertainment space.
Fourteen years after its initial release, the Gulfstream G550 continues to live up to its fantastic reputation.

As time progresses, so does technology. This continues to give Gulfstream a greater ability to exceed consumer expectations and delight them with unmatched quality and attention to detail. Several models are currently available; however, all of them can hold up to at least 10 passengers and cruise at a speed of at least Mach 0.80 — meaning the standards are high for any model released. What’s special about the new G500? Many, many things. Its impressive features not only involve speed and safety but also passenger luxuries such as furniture made of the finest materials, high-tech entertainment options, and panoramic windows.
Gulfstream has been producing innovative, luxurious, business jets for more than half a century. Designing safe, luxury aircraft is far more than just a job for Gulfstream, it’s a mastered passion.
In the mid-1950s, Roy Grumman proposed a business-purposed aircraft to facilitate post-war economic growth. In 1958, he introduced the first corporate jet, Gulfstream I (G1), and launched global business-class aviation. As the industry leader, Gulfstream’s dedication to the highest standards of quality, luxury, and safety have endeared its aircraft to jet owners.
By 2008, Gulfstream developers extended the company product line to include the G100, G200, G550, G450, and G150, of which the G550 is the only jet still in production. Each jet style encompassed attributes and options that remain popular with jet owners and passengers. The company’s designs set it apart from the competition:
No longer in production, the G100 and G200 are midsize aircraft that Gulfstream renamed after acquiring Galaxy Aerospace. With wide cabins for comfort and long ranges, both jets offer comfort and convenience for jet owners who need space to accommodate their needs.
Also retired from production, Gulfstream models G300 and G400 are both heavy jets and share the same Rolls-Royce engines with 13,850-pound thrust, but the smaller G300 could be considered the light version of the G400. The G400 offers multiple cabin layouts, local area network within the cabin, and exceeds the G300’s range of 3,600 nautical miles by 500.
Currently available along with the G280, G600, and G650, the G500 and G550 maintain Gulfstream’s reputation for the highest quality by offering faster operating speeds of Mach 0.925 and 0.885; extended ranges of 5,000 and 6,750 nautical miles; and greater passenger capacities, both seating up to 19. In 2016, a $61.5 million G550 stunned buyers with Pratt & Whitney Canada PW814GA engines with 15,144 pounds of thrust and an ultra-quiet cabin that can sleep eight. The G500 and G550 are in high demand.
The 2017 upgraded G500 release
The G500, however, is on track to be released later this year after it clears its FAA certifications for design specifications, airworthiness, and operational safety compliances. If you need to get anywhere fast, this jet offers speed-of-sound cruising and will carry eight passengers near Mach 1 and up to 19 passengers at Mach 0.85 up to 5,754 miles. Its high-speed internet is 34 times faster than the competition’s, so you and your guests can stream live events from an altitude of 51,000 feet.

What does it mean to set a new city-pair record? It means your plane is the fastest to fly from the departure to the destination point. It means connecting people across distant geographic locations with an aircraft’s range. For example, one record included a 10,000-nautical-mile flight from Rio de Janeiro to Tokyo — one of the longest city-pair flights on record.
According to the Aviation International News article, the G650ER’s latest record is already approved by the U.S. National Aeronautic Association and is awaiting world record approval by the Federation Aeronautique Internationale in Switzerland. The G650 line has already established more than 55 world records. With this flight, the G650ER will add this particular city pair to the ranks.
The history of the G650ER includes setting unique city-pair records and landing with excess fuel, according to PR Newswire.
White Plains, New York, to Beijing in 13 hours, 20 minutes in 2015
Beijing to Savannah, Georgia, (Gulfstream’s headquarters) in 12 hours the same year
The G650ER also set two extended-range speed records in 2014:
Los Angeles to Melbourne, Australia, in 14 hours, 58 minutes
Hong Kong to Teterboro, New Jersey, in 14 hours, 7 minutes
The original version, the Gulfstream G650, set plenty of speed and range records of its own. When the G650 touched down at the Paris-Le Bourget Airport for the 50th Annual Paris Air Show in 2013, it brought three new city-pair records with it.
Savannah, Georgia, to Paris in 8 hours, 16 minutes
Nice, France, to Sao Paulo in 11 hours, 10 minutes
Las Vegas to Madrid in 9 hours, 14 minutes
These records of tremendous speed and range highlight the very important role the G650 series has in the business jet industry. We’re excited to see what developments come of the recent Gulfstream Operators and Suppliers Conference.
