Windspeed's SkyDeck
SkyDeck photo courtesy of Windspeed

Windspeed Technologies announced a new feature to add in-flight entertainment value to private jet aircraft and create an experience that’s like no other. It’s a safe, semi-external viewing option that can be installed on wide-body aircraft and smaller executive jets.

Looking a little like a bubble poking out of the top of the plane and dubbed the “SkyDeck,” the canopy would be made of high-strength material, similar to that used in supersonic fighter jets and designed to withstand significant load. Coated with anti-condensation film, the surface would ensure clear viewing from all sides.

Conceptual designs show a pod-like clear canopy positioned toward the top rear of an aircraft that allows passengers a full view of the plane’s external environment: clouds, sky, and stars, to name a few. Once a passenger is positioned in the SkyDeck, he or she may rotate the seat to view a particular object, like a constellation, or direction. The positioning of the teardrop-shaped pod just before the tail of the plane is intentional, having the least possible effect on the airplane’s aerodynamics.

Flying head and shoulders above the fuselage could become the new wave of upgrades for business and private jet aircraft, but Windspeed sees commercial aircraft applications — in the form of an upgraded first-class experience — as well, giving airlines a new revenue stream. After all, in-flight entertainment options haven’t changed much in the last decade.

Essentially, the installation will go like this: A hole will be cut in the top of the jet and the one- or two-seat pod will be engineered in its place. Beverage service concerns have yet to be addressed, but surely the 360-degree view at 30,000-plus feet beats the need for a cold one in the hand.

Business jetIn the North American market, the demand for business jets appears to be increasing, according to recent forecast predictions from Embraer and Honeywell Aerospace. While political tensions and sluggish economic growth are driving a reserved approach to purchasing, operators continue to invest in aircraft retrofits and upgrades for existing jets, boosting aftermarket opportunities for preowned purchasers.

Embraer, offering a fleet of business jets including the Legacy and Phenom series, entered the business aviation market in 2000 and continues to enjoy large market acceptance. Embraer recently announced a modest increase in demand of 3% as well as a slight increase in deliveries compared with the previous decade.

This year’s Honeywell Business aviation Forecast predicts a similar 3% annual growth rate through 2025.

Lost momentum

Honeywell reports that growth in Brazil, Russia, India, and China has lost momentum. Slightly lowered purchases in the Middle East and Africa are to be expected due to significant political issues and ongoing conflicts, as is a decrease in Europe, which continues to deal with poor growth, a refugee crisis, and depreciated currency. The excitement is also gone from the Asia-Pacific market, with disappointing growth figures from government austerity measures and ongoing regional tensions.

Who is ordering jets?

According to Embraer, while the North American market continues to drive demand with orders for 4,850 aircraft, it is followed by:

  • Europe and Africa with 2,100 jets
  • The Middle East and Asia-Pacific with 1,500
  • Latin America with 650

Large jets continue to lead the market in terms of units and value, but midsize jets are expected to regain some of their former traction, which is good news for Embraer’s new Legacy 450 and 500 aircraft. In the short term, the light jet market continues to struggle with low estimated deliveries.

Businesspeople Boarding Executive JetThe overall jet market is still down after the recession, but with the economy slowly and steadily picking up, purchasing a private jet now could be the smart move your business needs.

1. How much will it cost?

The cost of a private jet varies considerably based on the type of jet, whether it is new or used, and the features it boasts. Of course, the initial purchase price is just the start and you must factor maintenance, storage (hangarage), pilot and crew, fuel, insurance, and more into your budget to get the full picture of what it will cost to own and operate a private jet.

2. Should you buy new or used?

In this regard, buying an aircraft is much like buying a new car. Preowned aircraft are normally purchased on an “as-is” basis, meaning the buyer accepts the aircraft in its current condition. The depreciation of the aircraft is factored into the price, and the value is often quite good when buying a used aircraft.

Similar to buying a used car, you will want to have the aircraft’s maintenance documents and log books thoroughly reviewed by someone experienced in aircraft ownership.

3. What size do you need?

Determining the aircraft size is critical to your private jet purchase.

  • Take into account the typical number of people who will be traveling, but consider clients and their partners, too.
  • Next, take a look at how far your plane will be traveling; the distance will affect the size of plane as well.
  • Last, consider how often you plan to travel with your private jet. The number of flights will help you determine your operating costs.

4. How to crew your aircraft?

Choosing how to crew your aircraft is another consideration when it comes to purchasing a private jet. This includes maintenance and flight crew — all the people and expertise needed to keep your jet in perfect condition and you flying in perfect safety and comfort. When you purchase a private jet, look into the options available for a management company that can maintain and oversee your aircraft, as well as hire a pilot and flight crew.

5. Do it yourself or find a partner?

Unfortunately, buying a private jet isn’t as easy as buying a car — there are many FAA regulations and tax-related legalities that must be considered. Having your own legal advisor will make the process easier, but working with an experienced partner can make a big difference in how much you’ll spend and what type of aircraft you purchase. A partner can also help you navigate the options for a trustworthy and affordable management service provider.

Pura Ulun Danu Bratan at Bali, IndonesiaSeveral high-end travel companies have recently come up with a novel journey idea: custom excursions that take travelers by private jet to some of the world’s most extraordinary destinations.

  • Snorkeling on a private island in Fiji
  • Hiking and visiting temples in Bali
  • Photographing on a safari in the Serengeti
  • Shopping in Marrakech, Morocco
  • Touring Prague

Of course, these travel companies are capitalizing on the sense of adventure and freedom that private jet owners are all too familiar with already. The ability to explore the far reaches of the globe — secluded islands, thriving urban centers, and everything in between — in the perfect luxury and comfort of a private jet can’t be beat. Traveling on a private jet means you can get far closer to inspiring and timeless destinations more quickly than commercial travel and with far fewer transfers.

In the new year, what discoveries will you make? What will your custom private jet excursion look like?

  • Will you take a snorkel safari in the deep turquoise waters of the tiny Micronesian island Nauru, with its untouched white sand beaches and only one registered taxi driver?
  • Will you pop into Ittoqqortoormiit, Greenland, a destination where the houses are extraordinarily colorful and the location is only accessible by helicopter for standard travelers?
  • Will you explore Masoala National Park in Madagascar, home to some of the most exotic geckos in the world?

The beauty of owning a private jet is that you can take the unprecedented opportunity to create your own custom private jet excursion — and avoid the $132,000 price tag to go on a pre-packaged itinerary that may not fit your desires or needs. A price like that for a single trip makes a private jet purchase look even better on the balance sheets.

g500-aerial-2-260x390
Riding on the tailwind of a highly successful year, Gulfstream’s smash-hit G650 is followed by a new aircraft, the Gulfstream 500, or G500. While the G650 made use of remarkable new technologies and continuing development with customer input, Gulfstream designers are proving once again that they can deliver what business flyers really want.

High-flying debut

The G500 made its first cross-country trip at the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) Convention and Exhibition in Las Vegas in November. The Gulfstream test pilots flew from Savannah, Georgia, into 75-knot headwinds and still accomplished the 1,630 nautical-mile flight in just 4 hours, 36 minutes.

Averaging a speed of Mach 0.85 and an altitude of 45,000 feet, the G500 is proving to be the fastest- and highest-flying aircraft to come from the Gulfstream development team yet.

Practical efficiency

Some facts about the Gulfstream 500:

  • Maximum range is 5,000 nautical miles
  • Maximum operating speed (Mach) is 0.925
  • Maximum cruising altitude is 51,000 feet

The width and height of the aircraft give it the optimal size and shape for speed, maneuverability, and fuel efficiency, while being large enough to carry up to 19 passengers. Fresh air, 100% replenished every two minutes, keeps the cabin refreshing; and the pressurized interior (to no more than 4,850 feet) significantly reduces jet lag.

Comfortable luxury

Of course, the G500 wouldn’t be a Gulfstream if it didn’t include sublime levels of comfort.

  • Panoramic windows allow for captivating views and plenty of natural light.
  • Cabin seats are equipped with built-in storage and touch-screen entertainment.
  • Exceptional baggage volume includes fold-down shelving that can be individually configured.
  • Hand-stitched leather, silk, or cashmere carpet and wood veneers complete the look.

Two additions to the Gulfstream 500 flight-test program are now undergoing rigorous testing. Certification is expected to be complete in 2017 and the first deliveries available in 2018.

ThinkstockPhotos-526116231-260x390Fly Safely and Comfortably this Holiday with 6 Travel Tips

As 2015 comes to a close and we look forward to our holiday travel plans, these helpful tips can make flying easier and more comfortable.

  1. Plan for weather disruptions. Weather can disrupt all kinds of travel plans, from getting to the airport all the way to creating havoc out of flight patterns. Understand this and have a backup plan or two in your pocket, and the disruptions won’t be as uncomfortable.
  2. Dress for comfort with style. While comfort is important on a flight, so is style. Carolina Herrera,in an interview with The Wall Street Journal, said her greatest fashion pet peeve is “… how people dress at the airport. It’s terrible. You know, if you dress up at the airport you will actually be taken care of perfectly. You’ll be the one who the stewards look after the most.”
  3. Pack for everything from meetings to parties. If you know where you’re going ahead of time, you can pack accordingly — but be prepared for a range of events, from business meetings to parties and evening soirees. The holidays are a time of connecting and magic, but it wouldn’t be the holiday season without a few surprise encounters.
  4. Arrive with a lovely gift for the host or hostess. This is especially true if you are a guest on a private flight. The exception to this rule is if the flight is a business trip shared with colleagues. Otherwise, a thoughtful gift of chocolates or a personalized item tells the host or hostess you appreciate the invitation and are respectful of their efforts.
  5. Be on time and be polite. You never want to be the one to cause a late start, so be on time. Smile, say “thank you,” and make eye contact to let those around you know that you care and appreciate their actions.
  6. Plan carefully if you are taking children and pets along. It’s a great time to take the children and pets with, but it’s important to keep them calm and comfortable while in flight. Smaller pets should be in a carrier that is connected to a seat belt during takeoff and landing, rather than blocking the aisle. The safest way for large dots to fly is with a body harness, not a collar. If you’re flying with small children, the stroller can often go straight onto the jet, giving you the freedom to keep the child comfortable and secure while you find your seat and put things away. Bring the safety seat you’d use in a car for children 2 years and younger. It’s great to introduce kids to flying early so they are better flyers later!

Gulfstream G500Riding on the tailwind of a highly successful year, Gulfstream’s smash-hit G650 is followed by a new aircraft, the Gulfstream 500, or G500.

Just Wing It: Aircraft Wing Technology Glides Forward

View over airplane wingWhat’s the next frontier in commercial and private aviation technology? Aircraft wings! Major aerospace organizations in the U.S. and U.K. are working to create a new generation of aircraft wing technology that will improve aircraft performance by

  • boosting fuel efficiency,
  • lowering manufacturing costs, and
  • reducing aircraft noise.

NASA: Wings that change shape

Scientists at NASA are working on a new aircraft wing surface that can change shape in-flight. The focus of this project is on making planes quieter and improving fuel efficiency. Researchers have replaced traditional wings’ aluminum flaps with shape-changing assemblies that can bend and twist to improve aerodynamic efficiency and reduce noise during takeoff and landing.

The technology is currently being tested on a modified Gulfstream III aircraft at the NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center in Edwards, California.

Composite wing structures

Across the Atlantic, GKN Aerospace Services is leading a 13-partner effort, including participants such as Bombardier Aerospace, GE Aviation, and Spirit AeroSystems as well as several U.K. universities, to design composite wing structures. Backed by the U.K.’s Aerospace Technology Institute, this new project has the following objectives:

  • Produce innovative wing architectures.
  • Assess tools to improve and enhance product design, process, and final product.
  • Advance composite and metallic manufacturing, assembly technology, and processes.
  • Develop innovative inspection and repair tools.

The U.K. project emerged from the recently completed Structures Technology Maturity (STeM), research project. The STeM program brought together the 13-member consortium of leading supply chain and aerospace companies to support development of new concepts in wing design. These concepts will push the boundaries of aircraft performance and contribute to the development of next-generation aircraft.

With a little luck, the new generation of automated processes and technologies will expand manufacturing capabilities and improve the speed and quality of aircraft wing production. Ideally, the new aircraft wing designs will also improve noise-reduction efforts for airports around the globe.

ThinkstockPhotos-515225813-260x390The latest smart technology coming out of the labs at Apple Inc. is a smartwatch, Apple’s latest and reportedly most-personal computer. The Apple Watch incorporates fitness tracking and other health capabilities and is designed to free people from their smartphones by putting upgraded technology on their wrists. Not a standalone device, the watch works by connecting via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi to the phone and then gives the wearer a new way to engage with apps beyond the phone.

It also gives app developers a whole new playing field.

App cabin control

Last year, Honeywell Aerospace demonstrated smartphone apps for controlling an aircraft cabin. Those apps were dropped from production, however, when the Apple Watch was introduced and Honeywell turned its sights on creating app-controlled cabin systems for aircraft equipped with its Ovation™ Select Cabin Management System (CMS). Lighting, display monitoring, temperature, electronic shades, and more can now be managed using the wearable device.

Watch and learn

Instead of hitting an attendant call button, passengers can notify flight attendants from their watches, giving them the opportunity to remain engaged in conversations, for example, instead of picking up and looking at their phones. Passengers can also be notified of when they should buckle their seat belts by the watch app — all without creating noise in the cabin or disturbing what’s in progress.

Ovation Select

Some of the key features of the Ovation Select CMS include:

  • High-definition (HD) entertainment, including HD widescreens and high-performance audio systems with video on demand
  • Integrated docking systems for distribution of media throughout the cabin from an iPad or iPhone
  • Environment monitoring for cabin temperature, lighting, all galley operations, and more
  • Multi-user capabilities, with the ability to control all integrated elements in different zones throughout the aircraft

Already designed for true flying convenience, the Ovation Select System is now fully optimized with the app. Now everyone on board can relax and enjoy the latest entertainment or collaborate on projects with complete independence.

ThinkstockPhotos-475716218-e1449677666603-260x318Making its first flight in August 1958, Grumman Gulfstream I was the world’s first “purpose-built business aircraft” and the brainchild of Roy Grumman, co-founder of Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation. Many of the 200 Grumman Gulfstream I aircraft produced are still in service today, each one a testament to the quality and flying history that is Gulfstream. Grumman followed that effort by giving business flyers the ability to cross oceans with the Gulfstream II, which first crossed the Atlantic in May 1958 — a short 10 years later.

Luxury meets demand

Gulfstream Aerospace continues to prove successful in 2015 for parent company General Dynamics Corp. (GD), as it announced its highest-ever quarterly revenue and fifth-consecutive profitable quarter exceeding $400 million. Sales of both midsize- and large-cabin Gulfstream aircraft are reported to be strong, with demand highly concentrated in North America.

The private jet that is on every millionaire’s holiday wish list, the Gulfstream G650, still has a 4-year waiting list. Owners of this particular jet include fashion designer Ralph Lauren and director of The Lord of the Rings series Peter Jackson.

Defense orders boost earnings

GD investors are pleased by the recent report of third-quarter earnings at $2.28 per share (an 11.2% increase from the previous year), due to higher orders from the defense sector in addition to continued demand from the private market. Company revenues of $7.99 billion were the result of the successful deliveries of 12 midsize-cabin jets and six large-cabin aircraft, among other sales, beating earnings estimates.

On the horizon

Gulfstream engineers work their design and development magic at the Research and Development Center in Savannah, Georgia, where laboratories feature the only hemi-anechoic (or echo-free) chamber used in the development of business aircraft. The room is designed to completely absorb sound and used for sound testing. The results, of course, are the reason why Gulfstream aircraft are considered some of the quietest airplanes in existence today.

We wish Gulfstream congratulations and have high hopes of continued high-flying innovations in the coming year.
