The European Business Aviation Convention and Exhibition is the premier European event for business aviation experts and fans. This year’s event, held May 24-26, 2016, in Geneva, was no exception. Presenters offered more than 450 exhibitions, representing over 40 countries, and attendees came from more than 100 countries around the world.

Features of this year’s event included a discussion panel on business aviation skills and careers with about 40 students and recent graduates from Hamburg University and the University of Applied Sciences, among others. Panelists from Europe and the U.S., including Christian Weiss of the Hay Group and Margriet Bredewold of Co-Guard gmbH, discussed diversity in the business aviation sector and answered students’ questions about green technology, aircraft management, and flying.

This year’s draw was the biggest airplane yet to be parked outside the Palexpo convention center — the BBJ 787-8, Boeing’s latest large-cabin aircraft. Highlights of the airplane include

  • seating for up to 40 passengers,
  • a 6,500-foot cabin with superior soundproofing,
  • spacious dining and lounge areas,
  • 55-inch flat screen monitors, and
  • 12-plus berthable seats.

The cabin is decorated in neutral earth tones and highlighted with metal accents and recessed lighting.

With the next big National Business Aviation Association event coming up in November, Gulfstream executives had big announcements to share: The first scheduled flight of the new G600 business jet will take place in the fourth quarter of 2016. The new schedule advances the first flight from the previously scheduled early 2017 and has members of the business aircraft jet industry all ears. The G600 is a shorter-range sister to the G500, which piled up 1,000 flight hours with test pilots reporting speeds up to Mach 0.995. The G600 is set for certification in 2018 with entry into service in 2019.

The Gulfstream G550 has garnered plenty of admiration, including the esteemed Robert J. Collier Trophy. What makes this aircraft such a success?

[su_carousel source=”media: 316,317,310,311″ link=”custom” width=”400″ height=”267″ responsive=”no” items=”1″ title=”no” autoplay=”8000″ speed=”500″]

From a pilot’s point of view, the Gulfstream G550 cockpit systems serve up every bit of information needed to fly the aircraft on the standard Head-Up Display (HUD). According to Gulfstream, the display includes an infrared imaging system that can help pilots effectively navigate through fog and other visual obscurities. The PlaneView avionics system delivers tremendous viewing area and, coupled with the HUD and enhanced vision system, has proven the G550 a very reliable, capable airplane.

While the cockpit is a delight, the G550 didn’t need big improvements to reduce drag and increase range because Gulfstream engineers tackled the last bit of drag reduction with the prototypes. Those enhancements, along with fuel efficiency improvements, allowed G550 pilots to show the jet’s long-range capability in October 2003 when they set the new distance record for a business jet by flying the G550 7,301 nautical miles from Seoul, South Korea, to Orlando, Florida.

According to the Flying magazine article, distinguishing features of the G550 include

  • 14 signature oval windows,
  • a 100%-fresh air system that eliminates the health risks of recycled air systems,
  • 6,750-nautical-mile range, and
  • 51,000-foot maximum cruise altitude.

The natural light, fresh air, and low altitude create a uniquely comfortable environment and significantly reduce jet lag.

Pilots set yet another Gulfstream G650ER city-pair speed record on a recent trip from Sydney to Los Angeles. The jet traveled 6,620 nautical miles in just 12 hours, 40 minutes, averaging a speed of Mach 0.86 on the trip.

What does it mean to set a new city-pair record? It means your plane is the fastest to fly from the departure to the destination point. It means connecting people across distant geographic locations with an aircraft’s range. For example, one record included a 10,000-nautical-mile flight from Rio de Janeiro to Tokyo — one of the longest city-pair flights on record.

According to the Aviation International News article, the G650ER’s latest record is already approved by the U.S. National Aeronautic Association and is awaiting world record approval by the Federation Aeronautique Internationale in Switzerland. The G650 line has already established more than 55 world records. With this flight, the G650ER will add this particular city pair to the ranks.

The history of the G650ER includes setting unique city-pair records and landing with excess fuel, according to PR Newswire.

  • White Plains, New York, to Beijing in 13 hours, 20 minutes in 2015
  • Beijing to Savannah, Georgia, (Gulfstream’s headquarters) in 12 hours the same year

The G650ER also set two extended-range speed records in 2014:

  • Los Angeles to Melbourne, Australia, in 14 hours, 58 minutes
  • Hong Kong to Teterboro, New Jersey, in 14 hours, 7 minutes

The original version, the Gulfstream G650, set plenty of speed and range records of its own. When the G650 touched down at the Paris-Le Bourget Airport for the 50th Annual Paris Air Show in 2013, it brought three new city-pair records with it.

  1. Savannah, Georgia, to Paris in 8 hours, 16 minutes
  2. Nice, France, to Sao Paulo in 11 hours, 10 minutes
  3. Las Vegas to Madrid in 9 hours, 14 minutes

These records of tremendous speed and range highlight the very important role the G650 series has in the business jet industry. We’re excited to see what developments come of the recent Gulfstream Operators and Suppliers Conference.

Bombardier Global 6000 - long range comfortBombardier’s third-generation globetrotter, the Global 6000, wins high marks from Aviation Week’s Fred George, who says it’s a “fast, comfortable, reliable” aircraft. While other long-range aircraft may fly farther, the Global 6000 wins on passenger comfort with the largest cabin volume of any business jet.

According to Flying magazine, the Global 6000 is a beautiful and capable machine that delivers on the promise of long range and makes shopping for a business jet easy. Author Robert Goyer says, “The range of the machine is part of its name. The Global 6000, for example, has an IFR range of 6,000 nm, which is enough to, well, take you to some spectacular places.”

Long-range aircraft like the Global 6000 can fly between business-critical cities such as London and Mumbai. Offering passengers the comforts of home, the Global 6000 can make such trips while also granting a restful night’s sleep and a morning shower.

Highlights of the Global 6000

  • A flight deck gives pilots unprecedented levels of control — based on the award-winning Rockwell Collins Fusion flight deck, one of the most advanced avionics systems in the world — and comfort with leather seats, multi-zone environmental control, and a comfy spot for the relief pilot.
  • An impressive range of over 6,000 nautical miles is supported by a BMW Rolls-Royce BR710 engine that delivers 15,000 pounds of thrust and unprecedented fuel efficiency.
  • The sleek and elegant cabin is comfortable on longer hauls and sports three environmental zones, a private stateroom with lavatory and shower, Blu-ray entertainment, high-speed internet, and more.

Bombardier’s 15 years and three generations of Global jets that have earned the company a high level of customer loyalty.

Drone - unmanned aircraftAt the Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Symposium in Florida, the first hosted by the Federal Aviation Administration, administrators Michael Huerta and Michael Whitaker explained where the agency is headed with regard to UAS. FAA decision-makers asserted their agency’s commitment to the safe, timely, and efficient integration of unmanned technology. Huerta and others also said that the FAA is taking the conversation of necessary and extraneous regulation very seriously.

As eager innovators conceive new uses for unmanned aircraft — including search and rescue, farm monitoring, surveying, infrastructure inspection, and more — the skies could become increasingly crowded with personal and commercial unmanned aircraft. This could pose more safety concerns as pilot reports of encounters with unmanned aircraft reported to the FAA have risen dramatically in just the past year.

Drones and other unmanned aircraft help as well as hinder. Highly publicized problems —such as firefighters forced to halt desperate firefighting operations due to a drone entering their airspace, for example — have the FAA pressing onward for clearly defined standards and regulations.

At the symposium, Huerta discussed the FAA’s UAS partnership with NASA to test various systems, including the administration’s UAS Traffic Management program focused on geofencing, altitude rules, and trajectory scheduling. These types of UAS integrations are critical developments and strong indicators of the engagement with and acceptance of UAS into the U.S. airspace system.

More than one autopilot solution is being developed. The University of Minnesota College of Science and Engineering and Sentera LLC have developed an autopilot toolkit under a broad open-source license.

“We’ve also created a product that is valuable not just to our business but also to the broader community working to develop the next generation of capabilities for unmanned systems,” said Sentera CEO Eric Taipale in a statement for UAS Vision.

Unmanned aircraft systems represent the future for the industry and have energized an entirely new generation’s interest in aviation. It remains to be seen what effects legislative efforts will have on the rising interest and investment in public sector UAS projects.

Gulfstream G650With the waiting list for new Gulfstream G650s nearly three years long, investing in a preowned G650 is definitely the way to go. Named one of the best private planes you can buy, the Gulfstream G650 is one of the biggest, fastest, and farthest-flying business jets available — with a range of 7,000 nautical miles.

When Gulfstream executives began talking about this new jet that had been in development for a number of years, they asked what exactly customers wanted. It was a bold move — and it paid off. Gulfstream’s advisory team held nothing back. They asked for an airplane that was bigger than the already successful G550. They wanted a plane with longer range, and they wanted it to be fast and light so it could land in important business aviation airports like Teterboro.

Demonstrating their commitment to a new manufacturing philosophy, Gulfstream decision-makers listened carefully and then delivered. According to Corporate Jet Investor, this particular jet quickly became one of the hottest on the market after its 2012 introduction.

One reporter referred to the flight deck of the G650 as “the most exciting flight deck” he had ever seen. With full synthetic vision, heads-up display, and more, it is arguably the most advanced business aircraft on the planet. Gulfstream engineers even developed a unique flight control system that allows the aircraft to be piloted the same way — regardless of payload.

While the G650 is the preferred aircraft for jet owners around the world, it’s unusual to see many of them for sale.

Aircraft brokerBefore you consider purchasing a new-to-you jet, it’s important to think about the best method of buying. Of course a flight before you buy and a careful pre-purchase inspection are critical steps, but if you’re working with an experienced and connected aircraft broker, you automatically get some important benefits that can make your aircraft purchase much easier and safer.

Industry knowledge

One of the most common mistakes buyers make in aircraft purchases is not considering the full range of options. You may have a good idea of the type of plane, number of seats, and which amenities and features you want, but when you work with a broker like one of the L & L International LTD experts, you get deep industry knowledge. That knowledge can make certain that you are exposed to all the options available, so you purchase an aircraft that hits all the right high notes.

Search and acquisition

Another critical reason to work with an aircraft broker is the fact that an expert in the field always has an ear to the ground — so to speak. A broker not only knows which types of aircraft are available or on the horizon but also has the connections to acquire the aircraft that fits your needs perfectly.

Valuation analysis

In addition to the overall condition of the aircraft, the primary factors that affect aircraft resale value include the following:

  • Engine hours — If the engine is close to its next recommended overhaul, the value is lower. Equally important is a schedule of consistent use and a record of accurate maintenance.
  • Damage history — If the aircraft has been damaged, its value is decreased, depending on the type of accident, level of damage, and which components were involved.
  • Airworthiness — The airworthiness directives issued by the Federal Aviation Administration are facts of life for most aircraft and should be carefully scrutinized.
  • Equipment — Installed avionics, deicing technology, and other extras can add value in some cases. In others, these extras can mask an older aircraft that may or may not suit your needs.

Having an expert to interpret terminology like “zero-time” engine, overhaul, and more can make a big difference in judging the real value of the aircraft.

Lender coordination

If you’re financing your aircraft purchase, your lender will have its own set of requirements. An experienced aircraft broker knows what those requirements are and stays on top of them without prodding or unnecessary reminders.

Paperwork handled

The forms for buying and selling aircraft are relatively extensive. The typical aircraft purchase will involve letters of intent, Aircraft Bill of Sale, purchase agreements, a U.S. Airworthiness Certificate, and more — and those are just a few. When all is said and done, having an aircraft reseller manage the paperwork is just plain useful.

Cessna CitationJetCessna has long been dominating the business jet market with its CitationJet line. Sporting small to midsize cabins, the Cessna CitationJets are light and fast, and according to a Flying magazine article, they have had huge success. After the original CitationJet debuted in 1989, the line gave way to several iterations — including the CJ2.

Luxury meets practicality
Completed in 2003, the CitationJet 2 (CJ2) is the third iteration of the Citation line, following the CJ and CJ 1. Though it shares many of the same features, the CJ2 includes an upgraded cabin, more power, and higher speeds.

Covered in a top-quality cloud-gray leather, the interior is dressed to the nines. High-gloss rosewood cabinetry with brushed aluminum hardware is paired with premium carpeting for a sleek, sophisticated look.

Larger than the original model, the CJ2 is built to accommodate in style. Seating for seven passengers is afforded in a fire-blocked configuration with club arrangement fold-out tables — four forward, two aft, and one combination.

Less maintenance, more flying
The CJ2 has Williams-Rolls FJ44-2C turbofan engines, making way for

  • a 3,800-feet-per-minute climb rate and
  • 416-knot max cruise speed.

To put this in perspective, the CJ and the CJ1 each had a max knot speed of 388.

With five feet added to the fuselage, the CJ2 has been a hit in the business jet market. With more space, speed, power, and comforts, having the CJ2 in your business fleet means less maintenance and more flying.

When a large, commercial aircraft approaches an airport for landing, its pilot knows exactly where his or her craft is in relation to the ground — even in low visibility — through a combination of radio signals and high-intensity lighting, according to a Scientific American article.

Pilots of smaller aircraft — such as private jets and helicopters — do not have such technology and must rely on a different set of skills and tech, according to the article. In serious weather situations, accidents are slightly more common due to “controlled flight into terrain” (CFIT) incidents. According to a NASA report, over 30% of fatal commercial airline accidents globally are categorized as CFIT.

Pilots of all aircraft need to avoid terrain and obstacles during all phases of flight. Key technologies are being developed to enhance operational safety for the unique situations pilots face when operating at low flight levels — where the need for continuous awareness of obstacles and terrain is critical.

Solutions on the horizon

Engineers are constantly working to develop state-of-the-art vision enhancing technologies to aid helicopter pilots. According to a PR Newswire article, those at Dassault are working on a Combined Vision System (CVS) called FalconEye, while Honeywell Aerospace‘s Synthetic Vision Systems (SVS) have been a staple in the industry. The Honeywell SVS includes a 3-D view with computer-generated terrain overlaid with advanced symbology for increased situational awareness.

Dassault’s FalconEye CVS uses thermal and synthetic imaging. According to an Aviation Week article, this combined system approach means that real-time Enhanced Vision System (EVS) images are placed as an overlay on data-derived synthetic images. On the same display, this combined visual allows for a more precise approach and landing.

An eye on the horizon

The information provided by the CVS systems is particularly useful at night and during degraded visual conditions, according to Honeywell. Pilots will also enjoy reduced workload as buildings, oil rigs, ships, and other obstacles are accurately depicted on the visual display, leaving the pilot free to focus on the mission.

According to the Scientific American article, Honeywell is likely to have some competition when its CVS hits the market in the next few years as others, including Ensco Inc., are also developing combined synthetic views.
